Enlighten Festival is coming to Kambri with a lighting showcase and other activities, bringing a bright splash of colour to our campus from Friday 4 March to Monday 14 March. You’ll see what makes our University special in a different light. We look forward to welcoming our staff, students and the wider community to share this unique after-dark experience on campus.
‘ANU after dark at Enlighten’ includes:
- a lighting showcase, along the façade of the Haydon-Allen building on University Avenue
- after-hours film sessions music and stand-up comedy shows
- a speaker series with ANU academics and notable artists
- Mixed Signals exhibition by artist Jess Cochrane
- arcade gaming fun at Game On on Joplin Lane

School of Art and Design Showcase

Past, future, art, science and design collide in this showcase of staff research and student work from the ANU School of Art and Design. Student works tackle subjects from neurodiversity to biodiversity and cancel culture, while our creative research explores pandemic visualisation, indigenous data sovereignty and the lost art of the lantern slide. Featuring student and graduate work by Mary Milner, Jemima Campey, Abbie Holbrook, Nathan McGaw, Louisa Ritchens, Millicent Yates, Brodie Feeney, Stella Wadeson and Jennifer Seevinck; and creative research projects by Jesse Newman (with the Population Health Exchange); Adam Goodes, Angie Abdilla and Baden Pailthorpe; and Martyn Jolly, Alexander Hunter, Rachael Thoms and Charles Martin.

Insight Sessions brings the artists and academics involved in the INSIGHT OUT exhibition together to speak about their experience, their practice and how art can be used as a medium to convey research to the general public.The project paired 24 visual arts students with an academic undertaking research at one of the University’s seven academic Colleges, in order to experiment with communicating important ideas via art. The resulting large-scale artworks traverse a range of disciplines, including painting, illustration, photography, and digital art.

Find escape in the glow of the silver screen at this year’s Anime After Dark, held nightly from Thursday 10 March to Monday the 14 of March 2022. There are five nights of free fun on offer, with an Anime feature film screening each evening. Set on the stage of the purpose-built Kambri Outdoor Amphitheatre, it’s a spectacular place to kick back and relax as the sun dips down over Sullivan’s Creek.
Get together with family and friends for a pre-movie meal and drinks at one of Kambri’s eateries, before settling in with pillows and blankets to soak up the laid-back vibes.

Take your recreation time to the next level – gather your friends and chill out at Game On, the free games arcade at Kambri at ANU featuring pinball and arcade machines, plus air hockey, and more.Located in Joplin Lane, this vibrant pop-up is free for ANU students, staff and visitors. Specially commissioned large-scale artworks created by exceptional talent from the ANU School of Art & Design (SOAD) contribute to the lively atmosphere. The result is a stress-free haven to game, socialise, and be immersed in creativity.
Game On is presented by Kambri at ANU and produced and curated by aMBUSH Gallery Canberra. From 10-14 March 2022, Game On will be open after dark! Opening hours are 10am until 9.30pm.

INSIGHT OUT experiments with the communication of ideas via the medium of art, and demonstrates the benefits of teamwork across diverse fields of study by combining the globally renowned academic research of ANU with the creativity of students from the ANU School of Art and Design.
The project paired 24 visual arts students with an academic undertaking research at one of the University’s seven academic Colleges: Arts and Social Sciences; Asia and the Pacific; Business and Economics; Engineering and Computer Science; Health and Medicine; Law; and Science.
Each pair met at length to discuss the academic’s research and interests, and consider ways in which the most vital elements of the information could be conveyed to the general public. The artists were then given stylistic freedom to represent the research visually, in the form of a physical artwork. The resulting works traverse a range of disciplines, including painting, illustration, photography, and digital art.

One of Australia’s fastest rising art stars, Jess Cochrane has recently returned to her hometown of Canberra for a brief stint from her home base in London. She has created new large-scale multidisciplinary pieces specifically for a solo exhibition, Mixed Signals.
Mixed Signals is a body of work that explores themes around desire and semiotics (the study of signs and symbols as elements of communicative behaviour) through Jess’s digital photography, which she styles in an editorial manner then paints over to provide the element of subversion she has become known for.
Produced and presented by aMBUSH Gallery, and co-curated with Cochrane, Mixed Signals is a brilliantly conceived and lively assortment of portraits featuring Cochrane’s friends, acquaintances and people she admires.
Mixed Signals will be open free of charge to the public until Sunday 20 March (showing daily from 10am-6pm weekdays and 12pm-5pm on weekends). All artworks are for sale.

Music on the Greens is free local live music. Kicking off at 4:30pm every day from Thursday 10 March to Monday 14 March 2022, local musicians will perform live sets on the central Kambri Lawns.
Our lineup showcases the best and brightest musical talent the ANU has to offer. From up-and-coming to established artists, the audience will be entertained by DJs, bands, singer-songwriters and more, providing a vibrant soundtrack for the long weekend!
