While We're Still Here

While We’re Still Here is an intriguing group show that uses the foundation of ‘still life’ – an art genre that has been around for thousands of years – as a vehicle to explore the material possessions, natural wonders and cultural phenomena of our modern-day life, through the practice of painting objects that are most often inanimate or sometimes even dead.

This new exhibition – opening at aMBUSH Gallery Sydney before travelling to aMBUSH Gallery Canberra – displays the works of twenty emerging and established Australian artists who use everyday items and the language of juxtaposition and hidden symbolism to convey their life experiences.

Considered composition, bold brushstrokes, detailed texture and rich colours reflect the dynamic diversity of these artists’ world views. They comment on subjects including consumerism, celebrity, relationships, feminism, religion and domesticity, while subtly reminding us of life’s inevitable conclusion.

Come and discover the multitude of meanings and emotions that everyday items can convey at the hands of a new generation of still life artists. From the bittersweet to the nostalgic, these contemporary works are imbued with moral contemplation, points of contention, earnest reflection and humour.

While We’re Still Here is produced and presented by aMBUSH Gallery, and co-curated by aMBUSH Gallery and Scott Owen.
