Go to your favourite bookstore and search for Dr Anita Heiss, and you’ll find books published across genres including non-fiction, historical fiction, commercial fiction and children’s novels, all authored by her.
Anita is a Wiradyuri woman and an award-winning author of 18 books (yes, you read that correctly!). She’s also an advocate for Indigenous literacy as she has worked in remote communities as a role model and encouraging young Indigenous Australians to write their own stories. She has also performed her work and lectured on Aboriginal literature across the globe.
Join us on 24 May 2022 for a She Leads In-Conversation between Dr Anita Heiss and Sarah Burr, discussing empowerment through education and why the stories of First Nations Australians need to be not only told but heard.

Speakers
Dr Anita Heiss
Dr Anita Heiss (Wiradyuri Nation) is an award-winning author of 18 books. She is an international speaker with a background in Australian First Nations literature calling her audiences to action on issues that she is passionate about. She is a board member of University of Queensland Press, Aboriginal Art Co, Circa Contemporary Theatre and the National Justice Project. Anita is a Professor of Communications at the University of Queensland and an Ambassador for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and the GO Foundation. Her play Tiddas, will premiere at the 2022 Brisbane Festival in partnership with La Boite Theatre and QPAC. Her most recent novel is Bila Yarrudhanggalangdhuray (River of Dreams) and her memoir Am I Black Enough for You?: 10 years on, will be released in 2022. Anita runs, eats chocolate and is proud to be a creative disruptor.
Sarah Burr
Sarah Burr is a Wiradjuri yinaa living on the lands of the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples. She is a former Vice President of YWCA Canberra, and currently works for the Commonwealth Government. Sarah has interviewed a number of bestselling Aboriginal authors and writers including Tara June Winch, Veronica Gorrie and Celeste Liddle.

YWCA Canberra’s She Leads In-Conversation events aim to provide the community with the opportunity to hear from women and non-binary leaders from different backgrounds and industries, in a conversational format, followed by a Q&A session and networking. Men are welcome to attend.
